ICAEW Regulatory Board – vacancy for an ICAEW member

The ICAEW Regulatory Board’s (IRB) primary objective is to ensure ICAEW’s regulatory and disciplinary work is carried out in the public interest and to provide assurance to the public, government, oversight regulators, and the media that each task is carried out objectively without any bias shown either towards or against the interests of an ICAEW member or firm.

ICAEW’s regulatory and disciplinary roles are carried out by the Professional Standards Department (PSD). These roles are separate to ICAEW’s other activities so that the PSD can monitor, support or take steps to ensure change if standards are not met.

The IRB is currently looking to appoint an ICAEW chartered accountant member (non lay) to join the IRB. From 1 January 2023, all IRB members will be eligible to receive a fee of £385 per meeting, with pro rata payments for other commitments. Expenses are reimbursed in line with ICAEW policy.

You will be joining the IRB at a time when ICAEW’s role as a regulator is under scrutiny from government, meaning you will have the opportunity to engage in the debate about the future of regulation and the role of the IRB. There will also be important work to do developing guidance on the new disciplinary framework and reviewing ICAEW’s Guidance on Sanctions. You’d also be involved in the quality assurance programme to review the effectiveness of the Professional Standards’ committees. You can read more about the role of the IRB, its focus during 2021 and 2022 and its planned activities during 2023 and beyond in the Regulatory and Conduct Annual Report 2021-2022.

The successful candidate will have an understanding and appreciation of the concept of the public interest; the ability to assess evidence and the good reasoning skills needed to make the right call. Experience of and an interest in regulation will be beneficial. It would also be helpful, though not essential for candidates to have experience of professional indemnity insurance.

We welcome applications from ICAEW members currently in practice, or recently retired,

The term of appointment is for three years from 1 January 2023, with the potential of reappointment for up to a further three years. Members of the IRB benefit from training and development opportunities and may be eligible to apply for appointment as Vice Chair, when the opportunity arises.

The IRB meets at least six times a year. The IRB also operates via sub groups for specific projects. IRB members are also able to get involved in the work of the sub groups which look at a range of matters, including anti-money laundering, legal services and risk. Taking into account the formal meetings, the work of the sub groups and the quality assurance programme, together with any planned training, you should expect to commit 1 day a month to the IRB.

We are committed to diversity in the Chartered Accountancy profession and at ICAEW. We believe the profession and our own organisation does best when it reflects the society we serve.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities and in particular, those that are currently underrepresented on the IRB.
